We here at the Special Parent Advocacy Group offer various Respite services for special needs children and their families. Following are the distinct Respite programs we offer.
Respite care is an essential part of the overall support that families may need to keep their family member with a disability at home, or with other care options. The word "respite" means to take a break from the daily challenges of caring for a child (or a parent) with special needs. It can be planned for a few hours or for as long as necessary, as long as it corresponds with governmental stipulations. Respite can take place in your home or temporarily in another setting, such as a day center or in the community.
In-Home (or Agency Hire) Respite:
This program gives families a CPR Certified experienced worker in their home to care for their child or adolescent with disabilities for up to 20 hours per month. The worker and the family will create a schedule and a care plan at intake.
After School Respite:
Mercer County Locations
After School Respite care is a program created to help parents that work longer hours than their children are at work, so that the child can be cared for and the parent can work.
Elementary and High School ASR children (ages 3-21) will attend the program at Mercer Elementary School (MCSSSD) 1020 Old Trenton Road Hamilton, NJ. Program is open to all Mercer County residents including Hamilton Residents. Priority Enrollment to children that attend Mercer County Special Services School District.
Elementary ASR children (ages 3 - 13) that live in Ewing and Trenton can attend the program at 20 Scotch Road, Ewing Township, NJ 08628, unless they attend Mercer County Special Services School District.
Passaic County Locations
Elementary ASR children (ages 3 - 13) that live in Paterson can attend programming at The Heritage Center 685 E 34th St, Paterson, NJ.

Weekend Respite care is a program catered to parents that need child care assistance during weekend hours. The program is community based and the groups are on the go to various community trips.
The base location for the weekend respite program at 20 Scotch Road, Ewing Township, NJ 08628 services children from Mercer, Middlesex, and Burlington Counties. Shuttle service is available and/or transportation available on a case by case need.
The base location for Passaic, Bergen, and Essex Counties is The Heritage Center at 685 34th Street Paterson, NJ 07513. Shuttle Service available to Bergen and Esssex Counties.

Self-Hire Respite care is specifically made so that parents can choose their own care providers from within the qualified candidates presented by the program.
Each Respite program has its unique advantages, because every child has the right to obtain quality care.
